okay so after hearing you say this, i put my flame suit on and went searching through the deap depths of the internet to find a few simple things...

Engines can be switched from or to synthetic oil at any time, as there is no real chemical difference.
****All oils pass a seal compatability test, but leaks can occur in older engines that have seals which are varnished over from the inside and have become dried out. High detergent levels in synthetic oil can clear away the "false seals" and allow some leakage that should stop after the once-dry seals are re-wetted and swell.****
Synthetic oils should not be considered as cost-effective, but rather a luxury item. Oil companies and auto mfgs agree that change intervals should not be extended beyond what is recommended in the service manual, despite the use of synthetic oil. Still, cost-effectiveness of synthetic oil can be obtained by extending the change interval of the oil filter to every 5,000 miles (top off after changing) and of the synthetic oil to every 10,000 miles. This regimen has been performed with very successful results.
Plain quality filters last as long as most people are willing to use the oil it filters. 10k miles is fine for even basic grade filters and the "one" oil company that leads the synthetic market states that no special filter is needed.
Be certain to use the weight (Example: 5W-20; 5W-30) of synthetic oil recommended for your vehicle and the weather conditions in which it is driven.
Before driving the vehicle after an oil change, be certain to start and run the engine to full oil pressure. Then, check for any oil leaks around the filter seal and pan plug. After shutting the motor off, wait three or four minutes for the oil to run back to the oil pan; then check the level of oil with the dipstick to be certain it is full.

so after reading that i would ASSUME that he was not doing one of the following things: 1.using the right gaskets 2. use a little RTV sealant when applying said gaskets 3. use the right weight oil...

just goes to show, i dont know shit...

Wow 10,000 miles. I would be so scared to run the car passed 5k miles. Hell I'm changing the oil today and its like 50 miles over 3k and that makes me worry. I know plenty of people run to about 5k miles per oil change but... is 10k reccommended by anybody? Especially if you want your motor to last for as long as possible.

I wouldn't. Especially on a car that gets driven hard. I might do it on a daily driven beater car that I didn't particularly care about, but I'd atleast keep the filter changes up to date.

don't know exactly who but my boss was talking about some manufactures coming out with 10k mile service intervals for oil changes on new cars in 09.

i personally have ran a mazda b2000 for well over 10k without changing the oil and i changed the filter around 10k. it would burn the oil so fast though i had to add oil and take the plugs out to clean them every week or so that i didn't figure it needed it. that truck still got 22+mpg in the city every day.

No wonder it drank so much oil. I could make 2 trips to the airport before the lifters would start rattling in that truck. Well, 1.5 as it would start rattling pretty hard on the way home. That thing did not like the interstate.

I think the best moment I had in that truck was one morning when I was letting it warm up (at least until the lifters stopped rattling) and this lady had to walk through the huge cloud to get into her SUV. Her kids thought it was cool as hell & tried to play in the smoke cloud. lol

sounds amazingly like both of the Saturns that I had, except they got high20's/low 30's in town. The last one was burning almost a quart of oil every tank. I used to joke that a fillup was 10 gallons and a quart.

i got it like that... i loved that truck too. do you still have it? id LOVE to have it back.

i remember when i took it to duval rd when they had the big mudhole at the new mall building area. from blanding and 295 to duval rd we pulled over twice and added 3 quarts on that trip because the said built in "low oil warning system" starting making noise!!

it definatly could not handle RPM's... but what'd i tell you when i sold it to ya... "keep oil in her and she'll run forever" and "i mean you seriously have to add oil every couple days."

i worked at nimnect caddilac at that time i drove that truck and i'd drain oil out of newish caddies with "clean" old oil into anti freeze jugs every day. i'd have like 5 anti freeze jugs full of used oil rolling around in the back to add to it.

i had a 92 sc2 that had alot of bottles run thru it at a 70hp shot, it ran 14.5 at 96mph with a 70 shot and a centerforce clutch.. lol. it starting smoking and burning oil like crazy but it still got mileage just like that. i got that car with like 1/4 of a million miles on it, then traded it to my brother who drove the wheels off it for a year or two, then he sold it to his sister in law who drove the shit outta it till it finally started killing stuff like fuel pumps, starters, ect and she traded it in. tuff little damn car though, it just didn't want to die. i get attached to stuff like that i actually start admiring my POS vehicles for being so tuff then when they die or i sell them i shed a tear cause its like a family member going away...

i still want to get another sc2 one day and run the stage 3 clutch and try a 100 shot and go for 13's at 100 !

I wish i'd never have gotten rid of the 92 that I had...as far as I know, a member of this board is still driving it. Should have over 300k on the clock by now, if the odometer ever started working again. I'd love to get a 1st gen coupe and try to stuff a s/c'd Ecotec into one. That would make for one helluva sleeper. :D

I sold it to Black Supra B rad back when he was working in Jax. When he re-located back out to L.A. he sold it to Magic 6, and I haven't talked to him in over a year. I don't think he still has it though because I think he moved and I can't imagine that truck making a road trip.

I have no idea why, but we run the trucks at work 36,000miles between changes. Granted its Castrol syn. blend..36,000 is a lil much.

BTW..I am talking Series 60 detroits, C15 accert cats, and isx/n14+ cummins

Me personally..I'd go 15-20k max on my OTR diesel

I get oil free so I change it as often as possible....just gotta buy $2.50 filters
